Why quick action matters

If you see one or two roaches, assume there are more hiding.

Cockroaches survive by staying hidden. The ones you see are usually scouts, displaced adults, or roaches forced into the open by crowding, cleaning, renovations, neighbouring pressure, or lack of food and water. In a GTA kitchen or condo, the real population may be tucked behind the fridge motor, under the sink, inside cabinet seams, behind baseboards, or inside wall and plumbing voids.

German cockroaches are especially serious because the life cycle keeps feeding the infestation. Egg capsules can contain dozens of eggs, newly hatched nymphs stay hidden in the same cracks as adults, and females can rebuild activity quickly if treatments do not reach harbourage zones. That is why Sterex focuses on access, preparation, residual protection, Actisol application, dusting, and follow-up planning for severe activity.

Fast Reproduction

Eggs, nymphs, and adults can exist at the same time. A treatment plan must account for what is visible now and what can hatch after service.

Hidden Harbourage

Roaches do not live in the middle of the floor. They hide in the tight, warm, damp spaces where food residue and moisture are nearby.

Health Concerns

Cockroaches can contaminate food surfaces, and their droppings and shed skins are associated with allergy and asthma concerns.

Shared Buildings

Apartments, condos, plazas, and older homes can have shared walls, plumbing chases, and service routes that keep pressure on a unit.

Cockroach identification

Common Cockroaches We Treat in the GTA

Correct identification matters because German, American, and Oriental cockroaches behave differently. Sterex matches the treatment route to the species, building type, moisture conditions, and visible activity.

German cockroach identification for Toronto cockroach control

German Cockroaches

The most common indoor cockroach in GTA kitchens, condos, apartments, restaurants, and shared housing. German cockroaches stay close to food, moisture, heat, and tight cracks around appliances.

  • Small, fast, light brown roaches with two dark stripes behind the head.
  • Females carry egg capsules until close to hatch, which helps new nymphs survive.
  • Heavy activity often hides behind fridges, dishwashers, cabinet hinges, and wall gaps.
American cockroach control for basements and commercial buildings in the GTA

American Cockroaches

Large reddish-brown cockroaches usually tied to damp structural areas, drains, sewers, boiler rooms, basements, and older commercial properties.

  • Much larger than German cockroaches and often seen near lower-level moisture.
  • Can move from utility areas into kitchens or storage rooms when conditions support them.
  • Treatment focuses on harbourage, moisture routes, drain-adjacent gaps, and voids.
Oriental cockroach treatment for damp GTA basements

Oriental Cockroaches

Dark, shiny cockroaches sometimes called water bugs. They prefer cool, damp spaces and are commonly associated with basements, crawl spaces, floor drains, and exterior entry points.

  • Often slower than German cockroaches but still difficult to remove without access.
  • Moisture control and exclusion are especially important for long-term results.
  • Activity may point to exterior pressure, plumbing gaps, or damp structural conditions.

Sterex treatment process

Our cockroach service is a three-step procedure.

A serious cockroach treatment cannot be a quick surface spray. Sterex combines three professional methods so the service reaches active trails, protected cracks, deep voids, and long-term harbourage areas.

Why severe infestations may need two visits

Eggs and hidden nymphs can continue to emerge after the first visit. For heavy German cockroach activity, a second treatment helps interrupt the life cycle, reinforce residual coverage, and target new activity that appears after hidden harbourage has been disturbed.

Step 1

Seclira Residual Spray

We apply a targeted Seclira residual spray to cracks, crevices, baseboards, under-sink areas, cabinet edges, appliance zones, and other harbourage points where cockroaches travel. The goal is not to coat open surfaces; it is to place the material where roaches live, cross, and return to shelter.

Step 2

Actisol Machine Application

The Actisol machine lets our technician push a fine treatment mist into tight spaces that are difficult to reach by hand, including wall voids, gaps between counters, deep appliance cavities, and hidden routes behind kitchen and bathroom fixtures. This is one of the biggest differences between a surface-only visit and a professional cockroach cleanout.

Step 3

Professional Dust Finish

We finish by applying professional insecticidal dust into selected voids, outlets, pipe penetrations, and long-term hiding zones where appropriate. Dust helps protect areas that remain dry and undisturbed, giving the treatment another layer against roaches that emerge after the first visit.

Preparation matters

The prep sheet is part of the treatment.

Prep is not busywork. It gives the technician access to the places where cockroaches live and prevents food, clutter, and hidden items from protecting the infestation. The more complete the preparation, the better the residual spray, Actisol application, and dust finish can perform.

Empty cabinets, bag loose items, and clear under appliances so treatment can reach harbourage behind motors, plumbing, and cabinet voids.

Bag food, clear cabinets, and expose appliance zones before service

Kitchen

  • Place food in sealed containers and remove it from the treatment area.
  • Empty cupboards, drawers, food pantries, pots, pans, utensils, and loose stored items.
  • Clear countertops while leaving small appliances accessible for inspection and movement.
  • Clean under the stove and fridge, and empty the warming drawer below the oven.
  • Remove competing food sources, crumbs, grease, spills, and residue from all treatment areas.
  • Keep removed items covered and contained so cockroaches are not carried into other rooms.

Bathroom

  • Clear counters, cabinets, sink vanities, and bathroom drawers.
  • Make sure plumbing lines under sinks are open and reachable.
  • Remove personal items from surfaces so cracks, pipe gaps, and cabinet interiors can be treated.

Living Areas & Bedrooms

  • Move furniture at least two feet away from walls where baseboard treatment is needed.
  • Expose baseboards, vacuum floors, and remove excessive clutter.
  • Unplug cords from outlets when technicians need access to wall plates or voids.

Pets

  • Pets and birds must be removed from the premises during the service window.
  • Fish tanks should be covered and pumps turned off before treatment begins.
  • Follow the technician's re-entry instructions before bringing pets back into treated areas.

After your cockroach treatment

After application, you may see increased activity for 24 to 48 hours as roaches are flushed from hiding places and contact treated areas. Do not clean treated zones for at least 48 hours unless your technician gives different instructions.

Avoid using other pest control chemicals, powders, sprays, or heavy cleaning products near treated areas because they can reduce the effectiveness of the professional application. Follow technician recommendations for sealing gaps, reducing moisture, and preventing future reintroduction.

Infestation signs

Signs you need a cockroach exterminator.

Cockroach infestations often start quietly. By the time roaches are visible on counters, in sinks, or crossing floors, they may already have established hidden harbourage behind appliances and cabinets. Watch for these signs before the activity spreads through the property.

  • A live cockroach when the lights turn on, especially near the fridge, stove, dishwasher, microwave, sink, or coffee station.
  • Pepper-like droppings in drawers, cabinet corners, hinges, appliance motors, pantry shelves, or under-sink areas.
  • Egg capsules, shed skins, dead roaches, or tiny nymphs that look like smaller versions of adults.
  • A musty or oily odour in heavier infestations, especially in warm and humid kitchens.
  • Activity that appears after a neighbour treats, after renovations, after new appliances arrive, or after food storage changes.
Cockroach infestation signs and identification

Professional inspection

We trace the activity back to the harbourage, not just the sighting.

Residential and commercial

Cockroach control for GTA properties.

Sterex treats cockroach problems in single-family homes, basements, condos, apartments, rental units, restaurants, commercial kitchens, offices, warehouses, and mixed-use buildings. Each site gets a plan based on access, sanitation, building pressure, and infestation severity.

Homes & Condos

We focus on kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, appliances, shared plumbing walls, baseboards, and storage areas where roaches survive between sightings.

Rental & Multi-Unit Buildings

Cockroach activity can move through service routes, adjacent units, and shared infrastructure. Documentation, preparation, access, and follow-up planning are critical.

Restaurants & Commercial Sites

Food-handling spaces need discreet, targeted treatments that support sanitation, reduce disruption, and focus on cracks, crevices, equipment legs, drains, and utility lines.

Cockroach treatment FAQ

Common cockroach control questions in the Greater Toronto Area

In many GTA homes, apartments, condos, and restaurants, one visible cockroach is only the part of the problem you happened to catch. Cockroaches are nocturnal and avoid open light, so daytime sightings, repeated sightings, baby roaches, droppings, or roaches near appliances usually mean there are more hiding in cracks, cabinets, motors, wall voids, and plumbing routes. German cockroach populations can be heavily weighted toward hidden nymphs, which is why a professional inspection looks beyond the single insect and searches the warm, moist harbourage areas that support the population.
