Rats

Rats are larger rodents that can cause significant damage to structures and spread various diseases. They are known for their intelligence and adaptability.

Appearance

Norway rats (brown rats) are robust with blunt snouts, small ears, and tails shorter than their body length. Roof rats (black rats) are more slender with pointed snouts, large ears, and tails longer than their body length.

Habitat

Norway rats typically burrow under buildings, along foundations, or in garbage dumps. Roof rats prefer elevated areas such as attics, rafters, and trees. Both species seek shelter near food and water sources.

Signs of Infestation

  • Large droppings (about 3/4 inch long)
  • Gnaw marks on wood, plastic, or electrical wiring
  • Greasy rub marks along walls and baseboards
  • Burrows near foundations
  • Scratching or scampering sounds

Prevention Tips

  • Seal all entry points larger than 1/2 inch
  • Keep food in sealed containers
  • Remove debris and clutter around the property
  • Trim vegetation away from the building
  • Properly store garbage in sealed containers
